Lacuna: Command the Void — the four faction commanders beneath their fleets

LORE

Four great powers. One universe. One question — what should it be?

THE UNIVERSE OF LACUNA

Four great powers vie for supremacy across the stars. Each emerged from the same cosmos yet answers its fundamental question differently. What should the universe be? The answer to that question is war.

THE GREAT EVENTS

The Great Singularity

Primordial black holes across the universe reached a critical threshold simultaneously — an event that should have been impossible. In that moment of convergence they did not simply consume. They awakened. Entities of pure void hunger emerged from the event horizons, not as travelers from elsewhere but as the hunger itself given form and will. The Eclipse Syndicate is the child of this moment.

The full scope of the Singularity remains unknown. The Eclipse Syndicate does not speak of its origins. They simply are.

The Great Fracture

A shattering event that tested every faction. The Astral Enclave survived it by weaving unbreakable shields from starlight itself. Other civilizations were broken, scattered, or destroyed entirely. The asteroid fields at the edges of inhabited space are its wreckage, and from that wreckage the Saurian Legion grew.

What caused the Great Fracture? What did it fracture? The wound it left in the universe may be the Lacuna itself — the gap, the missing piece, the thing that was lost. And if something was lost, something may be waking now to reclaim it.

SOLARIS EMPIRE

Sun-forged warriors who channel the raw fury of dying stars — born in fire, shaped by stellar death.

LEADER Kaelos Ustor

“Let the stars themselves fuel our wrath.”

Burning. Purified by fire. Ruled by the strongest.

Kaelos Ustor, leader of the Solaris

Origin

The Solaris Empire was born in the violence of stellar death. Supernovae — the most powerful explosions in the universe — are not tragedies to the Solaris Empire. They are birthplaces. The warriors of Solaris were forged in the crucible of dying stars, infused with the raw solar energy released at the moment of stellar collapse. They did not survive the death of stars. They became what those stars released.

Nature

Aggressive, expansionist, and glorious in their destruction. The Solaris Empire does not fight defensively. They believe the natural state of the universe is forward motion — expansion, conquest, burning. A Solaris ship that dies in battle taking enemies with it is not a loss. It is a victory. Sacrifice is a weapon, not a tragedy.

Philosophy

The universe burns. Everything eventually burns — stars, civilizations, even black holes eventually evaporate. The Solaris Empire simply accelerates that process and directs it with purpose. They believe fire purifies. Only the strongest survive the flame. What cannot withstand the fire does not deserve to endure.

Motivation

Solar dominance. To spread the power of stars across the void and burn away anything that stands in opposition. They are conquerors who believe the universe belongs to those willing to take it and hold it through overwhelming force.

Relationships

  • Eclipse Syndicate — Ultimate nemesis. The sun against the void, light against darkness.
  • Astral Enclave — Philosophical opposition: Astral preserves what Solaris burns. Yet they stand together in the Light Coalition, united in rejecting the void.
  • Saurian Legion — Natural allies in the Light Coalition. Both aggressive, both embrace destruction as generative.

ECLIPSE SYNDICATE

Born from the event horizons of primordial black holes — they are not travelers. They are the hunger.

LEADER Xul'Khor Tenebris

“All returns to the void. We are the acceleration.”

Dark. Consumed. Returned to void.

Xul'Khor Tenebris, leader of the Eclipse

Origin

The Eclipse Syndicate did not come from somewhere else. They emerged from the Great Singularity — the moment when primordial black holes reached critical convergence and the hunger at their cores achieved will and form. They are not entities who live near black holes. They are what black holes become when they wake up.

Nature

Entities of shadow, darkness, and consumption. They exist at the boundary between light and oblivion — the event horizon where nothing escapes. They are the shadows between stars, the silence between transmissions, the cold at the edge of a system's reach. They consume because consumption is their fundamental nature.

Philosophy

Everything returns to the void. The Eclipse Syndicate does not view this as tragedy — they view it as truth. Stars burn and die. Civilizations rise and fall. They are not evil in their own understanding. They are honest. The universe ends. They are the ending.

Motivation

To eclipse the light. Every star that burns is an affront to their nature. They do not want to rule the universe. They want to be the last thing in it before the lights go out.

Relationships

  • Solaris Empire — Ultimate nemesis. Sun against void.
  • Astral Enclave — Opposed by nature, allied in the Shadow Alliance by circumstance — an uneasy partnership.
  • Saurian Legion — Natural thematic kin. Eclipse hungers for the end; the Legion hungers to grow from it.

SAURIAN LEGION

They did not survive the Fracture. They grew from it.

LEADER Vactius Ironscale

“From the dust of stars we rise — and the void shall feed us.”

Growing. Evolving. Fed by endless conflict.

Vactius Ironscale, leader of the Saurian

Origin

The Saurian Legion did not build itself, and it did not descend from any people the other factions remember. It grew. The asteroid fields at the edge of inhabited space are the wreckage of the Great Fracture, saturated with nebular energy from nearby stellar nurseries. Over ages the shattered rock and metal began to organise itself, and from the green-veined seams of the debris came the first Saurians: scaled, armoured warriors whose bodies are half living tissue and half grown ore.

Nature

Primal, armoured and still growing. A Saurian wears its history as plating. Each battle adds mineral to its armour, and each kill feeds the Legion's growth. Older warriors are broader, harder and more dangerous than young ones. They are a warrior culture that treats growth through combat as sacred.

Philosophy

Consume, grow, dominate. The universe provides the material — asteroid fields, nebular energy, the wreckage of defeated enemies — and the Legion incorporates all of it. They are not cruel. They are hungry, and the wreckage of every war is food.

Motivation

Expansion and growth through combat. A Saurian fleet that never fights stagnates, so they are drawn to conflict. They also sense the Lacuna. It is the wound the Fracture left, and the Legion means to grow into it.

Relationships

  • Astral Enclave — The deepest opposition. What Astral heals, the Legion breaks down and incorporates.
  • Eclipse Syndicate — Thematic kin. Both feed on destruction and grow from darkness.
  • Solaris Empire — Natural allies in the Light Coalition. Solaris burns; the Legion absorbs the ash.

ASTRAL ENCLAVE

Regal beings of pure light and harmony — ancient masters of astral technology who outlast every storm.

LEADER Alianna Serenitas

“We do not break. We repair the universe.”

Preserved. Healed. Ascended to light.

Alianna Serenitas, leader of the Astral

Origin

The Astral Enclave predates the current age. They were already masters of astral technology when the Great Fracture occurred. While other civilizations were shattered, the Enclave survived intact by weaving unbreakable shields from starlight itself — a feat that has never been replicated. They did not merely survive the worst thing that ever happened to the universe. They made it look easy.

Nature

Regal, patient, eternal. They are beings of pure light — not the violent burning light of the Solaris Empire, but the steady enduring light of stars that have burned for billions of years. They fight because some things are worth protecting, and they are the only ones old enough and strong enough to protect them.

Philosophy

The universe is worth preserving. While other factions seek to conquer, consume, or burn, the Astral Enclave seeks to repair. They believe the damage done by the Great Fracture, the Great Singularity, and the wars that followed is not permanent. Storms pass, and endurance is its own form of power.

Motivation

Ascension to the stars and protection of light in the universe. Where Eclipse consumes the light and Solaris weaponizes it, Astral seeks to become one with it. They fight in the present because the future they are working toward is not yet safe.

Relationships

  • Eclipse Syndicate — Opposed by nature, allied in the Shadow Alliance by circumstance.
  • Saurian Legion — The deepest enmity. What Astral preserves, the Legion consumes.
  • Solaris Empire — Philosophical opposition, yet they share the Light Coalition and a rejection of the void.

ALLIANCES

In dual-deck play, the factions pair up: the Shadow Alliance (Eclipse Syndicate + Astral Enclave) and the Light Coalition (Solaris Empire + Saurian Legion).

THE CENTRAL MYSTERY

A lacuna is a gap — something missing, an absence that shapes everything around it. The four factions fight over a universe with something missing at its center.

The Great Fracture broke something. The Great Singularity released something. Whatever was lost, whatever was unleashed — it is waking now. The Eclipse Syndicate feeds on it. The Solaris Empire wants to burn it. The Astral Enclave wants to heal it. The Saurian Legion wants to grow into it.

None of them know what it is yet.
